CALL (508) 378-2652What to Do if You Lose Heat
If you suddenly lose heat in your home, taking immediate action is critical for the comfort and safety of your family. Plus, losing heat in your home for an extended period of time can cause significant damage if your pipes freeze and burst, leaving you with a costly mess. Before you call for emergency service, there are some quick and easy steps you can take to try to get the heat back up and running safely.
- Check Your Thermostat. Have a programmable thermostat? First make sure the batteries haven’t gone dead. If the batteries are working, or if you have a manual thermostat, check that the thermostat is switched to HEAT, and is set higher than the temperature inside.
- Check All Switches. Make sure the emergency furnace switches, fuses, and circuit breakers are all switched to the “on” position.
- Verify Your Fuel Level. Check the oil tank gauge to see if you have home heating oil in your tank. If not, contact Forni Bros right away to refill the tank and restart your system.
- Press the Reset Button. Press the RESET button on your burner ONCE and check to see if a flame comes on. If not, DO NOT press the button again—call Forni Bros for service right away.
Hopefully, following these steps will get your heat back up and running without further problems. If you perform the above actions and your heat still isn’t turning on, call us for assistance.
Prevent a No-Heat Emergency
The best way to prevent your heating from going out is to maintain your system with annual tune-ups and keep your heating oil storage tank full. You should book annual maintenance for your heating system each year before you power on your unit. A yearly tune-up will significantly reduce your risk for service calls and mid-season breakdowns; plus, you’ll enjoy greater energy efficiency and improved indoor air quality.
In addition to scheduling maintenance for your heating system, prevent a loss of heat by always making sure you have plenty of fuel in your heating oil storage tank. You should order a refill of heating oil when your tank is at or above ¼ full. The best way to prevent a fuel run-out is to sign up for automatic delivery, and leave the ordering and scheduling of heating oil deliveries to the professionals at Forni Bros.
